Thousands of victims have reported sexual and physical assault by Uber drivers or other riders. Both companies may be partially at-fault. Safety reports revealed that over 3,800 sexual assaults occurred in Uber rideshares in a one-year period, and over 4,000 vehicles in a two-year period. To date, 22 Uber victims have filed lawsuits against the companies, alleging unwanted sexual contact and harassment by drivers or other passengers.

Rideshare Companies Are Failing Customers

Rideshare companies should ensure the safety of their customers. Uber implemented a “Safe Rides Fee” in 2014, claiming fees would fund background checks and driver training programs, though victims allege that never occurred. Customers should not have to pay fees to ensure their own safety. Many assaults could have been prevented with appropriate safety measures, such as:

  • Properly screening drivers.
  • Removing drivers who sexually assaulted passengers.
  • Implementing app-based safety measures.
  • Responding to passenger complaints.
